In the world of K-pop

Believe it or not, the significance of CDs still exists today. Entertainment companies in Korea are making big money from it.

When we say 4 versions of a CD is released, it doesn't mean 4 different CDs with different songs on them - it is actually the same CD with the same songs, but with 4 different versions of packaging.

Yep, you heard it right - different packaging!

K-pop fans these days are not buying CDs for the sake of keeping the CD. They are spending money for the different photobooks and photocards that come with it. Collectors are targeted. Some companies are even smart enough to include limited edition photocards which are issued at random, meaning the buying of CDs then turns into some kind of lottery event - if your CD contains the limited edition photocard, you've hit the jackpot!!  Needless to say, there's a big aftermarket for this stuff as well - a limited edition photocard like that could sell for well over $100 AUD. And if your CD itself goes out of print, up goes the price again.

Well, ridiculous or not, there are K-pop groups like BTS breaking records continuously with just CD preorders alone!
